EQ7 Winner

Yesterday I played some more with EQ7. I registered for the FREE online BOTM class on Craftsy by Amy Gibson. One of her February blocks is made with HST's and you know how they are my favorite thing to use in quilting, I knew I just had to make a chunky chevron quilt using the block she showed us.  I wanted to see how it would look in the color and size I wanted to make so I plugged it into my EQ7. Here's my finished result. The colors are much brighter, I'm going to use the Crazy Daisy fabric I ordered from FQS a while ago. There's so much that you can do with the program.

And just for fun I did this same design in the Quilt Design Wizard pretty easily too. The QDW is a great first step to use.

My New Mr. Random

But first a story...

A few minutes ago I was sitting in the living room watching a movie with my wonderful Hubby. Since I have that dreaded apple disease, (you know the one that permanently attaches an electronic devise to your body?) my IPad was with me. Since the movie wasn't interesting me I decided to write this post. So I looked to see how many comments there were and said to my Husband "Pick a Number between 1 and 144". Usually he would want to know why (its the mathematician in him I think), for instance maybe it was something for some math equation...wait that's me were talking about? No he would never think that :)

Anyway he just thought for a second and said 137. Then I realized that I usually use Mr. Random.org but I like my Mr. Random better...hes a lot cuter and makes a better margarita than that other Random guy. Let's face it the old guy is kinda boring, just sitting there like a lump on a log. He doesnt even get excited to pick a number and getting a pic of him is more difficult than it should be. And like I said I think he's a cutie! Here's a pic of my hubby Tim with our 2 sons, Tyler and Bryan. This was taken last Christmas Eve while we were waiting for the homemade pizzas to finish cooking (that's our family tradition).

Corner Triangles aka Connectors....A Tutorial

A while back on twitter I asked what a square with a small half square triangle (HST) on one of the corners is called. We decided it was called 'corner triangles'. Then I went to my quilting class that week and found out that the term is called connectors, although I like corner triangles better.

On Wednesdays post about the Friendly Quilt Along I promised to show you a way to sew the connectors on...
"On Saturday, October 8th I will be showing you a very easy way to sew the connector squares on with out pinning or drawing on the back of the small square or even just guessing where the diagonal really is. It's a fool proof way that will make this quilt go fast."

Like so many other things I learned this technique from Gail at The Berry Patch. She is probably the most knowledgeable quilter I know, I always learn something new and wonderful at her classes.

For each square you will need a larger square (mine is 5") and a smaller square (mine is 2.5"). These sizes are not set in stone, your pattern might be different.

1. First you need to get your machine ready. Do you have a marked line (like with a sharpie) or a piece of take along your 1/4" line? Just about everyone I know around here does. What you do is put your needle in the down position and raise your presser foot. Insert a ruler against the needle and lower your presser foot. Line up a line on your ruler perpendicular to a line on your machine table so you know your ruler is straight, ie. the 4" line on the ruler. Then with a fine point sharpie draw a line against the ruler or place a 1/4" piece of tape in the same spot. I didn't have any 1/4" tape when I did this so I used a piece of painters tape that I cut with my rotary cutter to 1/4". And don't worry about the sharpie, you can always remove it with denatured alcohol.  

Now you are ready to start piecing.

2. Take your 5" square and place the 2.5" square on one corner, right sides together. Make sure the corner and edges line up. When I talk about the top left and bottom right part of the small square it is from this position I am referring to.

3. Take the squares to your machine. You will start sewing from the top left corner of the small square and sew down to the bottom right corner. Line your top left point up with your needle and the bottom right corner with the left side of the tape. Stitch down the center of the triangle, watching the tape line (your machine will keep sewing if you look away from the presser foot and needle for this, I promise).

If your bottom right corner of the small square follows the line the needle will end up right at the bottom right corner. There you have a perfect diagonal line. 

4. Press the square over to make a triangle.

5. Normally you would be told to trim the bottom 2 pieces under the triangle, but I think it's best to only trim the center. If you are off by any amount (and lets face who isn't at times) keeping the bottom part (in other words the part of the big square) will keep your square integrity and give you the correct line to sew on.

There you have it...an easy way to sew on the diagonal...no pins, no pencils and no guessing.

There's so many applications this can be used for, not just connector squares. Can you think of any others?

October is...

Busy! I have a lot planned for you this month.

Kate Spain month starts today! This was the latest Designer Select FQ kit that I received from The Fat Quarter Shop and is what I will be using this month for one of the quilts I am making. If you haven't joined this club, you still can, there are some great kits coming up this month. Or you can order the kit separately. I will be showing you lots of projects made with Kate Spain fabric, will have some wonderful guest bloggers and will myself be working on 2 different quilts with Terrain and trying to finish the Central Park quilt I made (it just needs to be basted, quilted and bound). And there will be a giveaway! If you would like to be a guest blogger or show your Kate Spain projects let me know, there's still time to join in the fun.

October is also National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This is a cause that is near and dear to my heart. I have heard from a lot of you that have been touched by this horrible disease. Please keep those comments coming. Let's all hope that someday someone will find a cure for this and all cancers.
I will have several guest bloggers show you their projects made for loved ones with breast cancer or projects they made for donation. I'll also be sharing links to organizations that support breast cancer patients, their families and raise awareness.

Getting to know Quilt Dad Better

How did you like my little quiz? Was it easy or hard? How well do you really know Quilt Dad?

Here's the correct answers...

1. What was the first fabric you choose for your FQ kit?

I started with this print from the Prince Charming line by Tula Pink as my jumping-off point:

Prince Charming was about to be released when I made my selections, and I really wanted to include pieces of it in my bundle. I chose this print because it allowed me to go in many directions with my remaining selections, and it is from this print that I began going down the path of focusing on teals and greys.
I think this may surprise some people because, in the final bundle, it's one of the more recessive prints -- a supporting player, if you will, behind the strong tones of green and navy blue. I guess it just goes to show that you can start building a palette of prints and solids from anywhere -- you don't have to start with the most dominant fabric!

If you chose B then you got it right!

2. What is your favorite fabric or fabric line currently and why?

Wow, this is always such a tough question. Let's see ... I'm crushing hard on Melody Miller's newest line, Ruby Star Spring. I just love the colors, the gorgeous linen-like feel of the base cloth, and that giant bee. I'm planning a quilt with nice, big blocks -- and lots of solids -- to feature this line.

I'm also a big fan of Happy Mochi Yum Yum, Monica Solorio-Snow's newest line for Lecien. The colors are so vibrant and the prints so ... well, happy! What else would you expect from the Happy Zombie herself? I'm currently in full-on hoard mode of this line -- don't know what I want to make yet, but I want to be prepared when I figure it out.

Finally, although it's not even out yet, I simply cannot wait to get my hands on some of Lizzy House's new line, Outfoxed. To get me through the months until it's released, I've been getting my fix with some of Lizzy's Outfoxed embroidery patterns.

3. What is your favorite sports team?
Well, I grew up in New York City, so I find myself rooting for the Yankees and the Jets ... but moving to North Carolina, as one might expect, has converted me from a pro sports fan to a college sports fan. I'm a UNC graduate so you can always find me cheering on my Tar Heels ... especially when March Madness rolls around, and even more especially any time they're playing Dook.

4.  What publication are you involved in?

I hope that, by now, many of you are familiar with Fat Quarterly (http://www.fatquarterly.com). It's a completely digital e-zine created by modern quilters, for modern quilters. My fellow FQ team members (Katy Jones, Tacha Bruecher, and Brioni Greenberg) and I work hard to bring fun new patterns, activities, features and information to the modern quilting community. Aside from maintaining a very active blog, we publish a collection of patterns in a fun and easy-to-read electronic format four times per year (hence the "quarterly" in our name!)

The strength of Fat Quarterly is its authentic roots in the modern quilting community, and we invite all quilters everywhere to get involved in FQ in many different ways. Come on over and visit -- we'd love to see you there!

Now for some really exciting news...

The 5th question I asked John was

If you had to pick another FQ kit for the Fat Quarter Shop what fabrics would you use? But I couldn't figure out a good way to make it a multiple choice question so I saved it for a surprise! As I age, and the family grows in leaps and bounds, I'm finding the stress of Christmas has escalated because of the commercialism. That's why I'm beginning to like Thanksgiving better. I have always loved fall and the colors/scents of the season. I have on a backburner of my mind to make some large dresden plate 'chargers' in fall colors for our table. I also thinking of using Christmas colors on the reverse to get double the use out of them, but as of yet, I have not started that project. :)
I have always wanted a diamond quilt but am too intimidated to cut and sew them. With the GO cutter, that Diamonds to Go quilt would be a breeze (I think?) :)
